Tarraco Viva: Roman Tarragona reborn
Every May, Tarraco Viva fills Tarragona with legionaries and gladiators. Roman re-enactments in the real Amphitheatre and Circus, with most events free.
Tarraco Viva turns Tarragona into a Roman city every May. It is an international festival of historical outreach that recreates life in ancient Tarraco among its real monuments: legionaries, gladiators and craftspeople take over the Amphitheatre, the Circus and the walls in one of Europe's most respected Roman history events.
What Tarraco Viva is
The festival began in 1999 as citizen support for Tarraco's bid to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a status the city earned in November 2000. It has run every year since and is now a benchmark for sharing Roman history. This is not a medieval fair or a themed market: the aim is to show, with real rigour, how people lived, ate, fought and believed in ancient Rome.
When it takes place in 2026
The 2026 edition, the twenty-eighth, runs from 11 to 24 May, with the busiest programming over the two central weekends. This year's theme is "Why Rome?", a reflection on why we still look to the Roman world to understand the present. The programme tops 500 events, so it is worth checking the official calendar at tarracoviva.com and booking limited-capacity activities early.
Re-enactments in real settings
What makes Tarraco Viva unique is the backdrop: nothing imitates Rome, because the settings are genuine. The Amphitheatre, built by the sea in the late 1st century, hosted gladiator combats before thousands of spectators and now fills again with fighting displays. The Roman Circus, one of the best preserved in the West, evokes the chariot races. Re-enactment groups from several countries show legionary drills, equestrian sports and scenes of everyday life.
Beyond the spectacle
The festival goes far beyond the re-enactments. There are talks by historians and archaeologists, ancient music concerts, an archaeological film season and workshops for all ages. Especially popular are the wine tastings and Roman cuisine sessions, which reconstruct recipes from classical sources. Most events are free; only a few specific activities require a ticket or advance booking.

Tips for your visit
Wear comfortable shoes: many settings sit in the cobbled upper town, and you cover the distance between the Amphitheatre, the Circus and the Provincial Forum on foot. The midday May sun is strong, so save outdoor re-enactments for early morning or late afternoon. Pair the festival with an unhurried visit to the archaeological ensemble, which stays open outside the scheduled acts.
