Tarragona in One Day: A Walkable Itinerary
A 24-hour Tarragona itinerary: Roman Tarraco in the morning, lunch in the Serrallo, and an afternoon of beach or aqueduct. All on foot.
Seeing Tarragona in one day is entirely possible and well worth it: ancient Roman Tarraco, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, packs its great monuments into a compact old town you can cover almost entirely on foot. This practical itinerary splits the 24 hours into a Roman morning, a seafood lunch, and an afternoon by the sea or at the aqueduct.
Before you start: getting there and getting around
Tarragona has two train stations. Tarragona Station, next to the port and the centre, is the most convenient for a walking visit. Camp de Tarragona Station handles high-speed trains but sits about 11 km from the city, linked by a shuttle bus. From Barcelona Sants, the fastest trains take little more than half an hour. Once in the centre, nearly everything is done on foot.
Morning: Roman Tarraco by the sea
Start early at the most photographed monument: the Roman Amphitheatre, wedged between the old town and the Mediterranean, where gladiators once fought with the sea as a backdrop. From there, head up to the Roman Circus, one of the few circuses in the world preserved within a city, where chariot races took place, and the Praetorium (Tower of the Praetor), used as a royal palace in the Middle Ages.
Continue to the Provincial Forum, the old political heart of the province, and walk sections of the Roman walls, the oldest fortification of Tarraco (3rd century BC). Allow a good hour for this area, and buy a combined ticket if you want to enter several sites.
The Cathedral and the Part Alta
Crown the morning with the Cathedral of Santa Tecla, built over the former Roman temple, and lose yourself in the Part Alta, the medieval heart of the city. Its alleys open onto charming squares like Plaça del Rei and Plaça del Fórum. Before heading down for lunch, step out onto the Balcó del Mediterrani, at the end of the Rambla Nova, a viewpoint with sweeping sea panoramas that has become a local meeting point.

Lunch in the Serrallo: fish and rice
At midday, head down to the Serrallo, the seafaring quarter beside the port. Here, among fishing boats and the fish market, the descendants of fishermen keep the city's maritime cooking alive. It is the birthplace of romesco, the most international of Catalan sauces. Its restaurants serve creamy rice dishes, seafood paellas, fresh local fish and shellfish platters. Prices vary by venue and dish, so it's wise to book on weekends.
Afternoon: El Miracle beach or the Aqueduct
In the afternoon you have two options, depending on the season and your appetite for the sea.
- Beach plan: El Miracle beach is a few minutes' walk from the Amphitheatre, perfect for a swim or a stroll with the Roman city behind you. The nearby Arrabassada beach is another good choice.
- Monument plan: head to the Les Ferreres Aqueduct, known as the Pont del Diable (Devil's Bridge), on the outskirts. It is one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in the world, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set in a park ideal for a walk. Reach it by city bus or car.
Activities in Tarragona: a guided tour of Roman Tarraco makes the most of a short day and explains the context of each monument. Book tours and tickets on GetYourGuide.
If you're lucky with the timing, Tarragona comes alive with its traditions: the castells (human towers), born in this area and recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010, or the historical re-enactment festival Tarraco Viva in spring. In winter, calçot season fills Catalan tables.
