El Serrallo is Tarragona's fishermen's quarter, right next to the harbour. Its market hosts the auction of freshly landed trawler-caught fish, Monday to Friday in the afternoon (roughly 4:00-5:15pm), and the restaurants along the Moll de Pescadors are famous for their romesco de peix.
What makes El Serrallo special
A fishing village
Born in the mid-19th century beside the harbour, it still has low streets, traditional fishermen's houses and a village feel just minutes from central Tarragona.
The market and its auction
At the llotja, trawler-caught fish is auctioned crate by crate as soon as it is landed, Monday to Friday in the afternoon. It's one of the few fishing rituals you can still watch up close.
Seafood cooking
The Moll de Pescadors is packed with restaurants serving fresh fish and shellfish: red prawn, langoustine, monkfish, octopus and sardine, with romesco as the sauce of choice.
Living tradition
The church of Sant Pere, patron of fishermen, and the festival of the Virgen del Carmen each July keep the quarter's customs alive and well.
El Serrallo in depth
The fish auction at the market
Every afternoon, the trawlers return to the harbour and unload their catch at El Serrallo's market. There the auction takes place crate by crate, with buyers and restaurateurs bidding on the freshly landed fish. The sale runs Monday to Friday, roughly between 4:00 and 5:15pm, and some of the catch is also traded electronically. It's one of the most authentic experiences in the quarter: watching monkfish, hake or prawn go from sea to auction in a matter of hours.
Romesco de peix and the local kitchen
The signature dish of El Serrallo is romesco de peix: a fish and shellfish stew coated in romesco sauce, made with roasted dried peppers, tomato and roasted garlic, almonds and hazelnuts. Alongside it, suquet and romescada round out the seafood repertoire, together with rice dishes and grilled fish. Romesco sauce, born from this seafaring cuisine, is today one of the gastronomic hallmarks of the whole of Tarragona.
Strolling along the Moll de Pescadors
The Moll de Pescadors is the gastronomic heart of El Serrallo: a row of waterfront restaurants, with the boats moored alongside and the harbour's modernista clock as a backdrop. Beyond the table, the promenade lets you watch the port at work, visit the church of Sant Pere Apòstol and drop by the Museu del Port. It's a relaxed plan, perfect for a long, lingering meal beside the Mediterranean.
