What Tarraco Viva is and why it's unique

A festival of living Rome

Tarraco Viva is a Roman history and re-enactment festival where specialist groups from Spain and Italy stage everyday life, the army, food and the spectacles of ancient Rome with real archaeological accuracy.

Born in 1999

It started in 1999 and reaches its 28th edition in 2026, now firmly established as one of Europe's leading Roman re-enactment events and a cultural highlight of Tarragona's calendar.

Always in May

It takes place in mid-May over around fifteen days. In 2026 it runs from 11 to 24 May, with the busiest programming concentrated on the two central weekends.

Inside the real monuments

What sets it apart from other Roman fairs is the setting: the re-enactments happen inside the archaeological ensemble of Tarraco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, not in a venue built for the occasion.

The re-enactments on the stages of ancient Tarraco

Gladiators in the amphitheatre

The Roman amphitheatre, right by the sea, once again fills with gladiator combats staged by specialist groups. It's one of the festival's most sought-after moments and lets you picture how Roman crowds experienced the spectacles on this very spot almost two thousand years ago.

Legions, daily life and Roman cooking

The programme goes far beyond the arena: tactics of the early imperial legion, military camps, trades, religion, the role of women and demonstrations of ancient Roman cooking. Much of the everyday-life re-enactment is concentrated in the Camp de Mart gardens, next to the city walls.

Circus, forum and walls as the backdrop

Beyond the amphitheatre, the activities make use of other monuments in Tarragona's Roman ensemble, such as the circus, the forums and the walls. Walking among original stones while a legion marches past beside you is the experience that no Roman fair on an empty plot could ever offer.
